Dean's Oncology and Hematology specialists (oncologists and hematologists) provide treatment for adult patients with cancers and blood diseases. They provide care at the primary location of Dean Clinic - Hematology & Oncology, and also provide services at the following Dean locations:

Treatment of Cancer 

There are many available treatments for cancer. Your oncologist will discuss the option best for you. Treatments may include:

• Oral or IV chemotherapy
• Hormone therapy
• Biological therapy
• Radiation therapy

Treatments may involve one or more of these options. Information about your treatment and managing its side effects will be provided once you and your physician have decided on a treatment plan.

Treatment of Blood Disorders 

Hematologists are specialists trained in diseases of the blood. These specialists focus on the treatment all blood disorders, including:

• Anemia
• Clotting disorders
• Sickle cell disease
• Hemophilia
• Cancers of the blood and bone marrow including acute and chronic leukemia, lymphoma (cancer of the lymphatic system) and hematologic malignancies such as myeloma

Dean's oncologists and hematologists play an important role in helping educate each patient about their disease. This includes helping patients understand their pathology results, the implications of their disease, their prognosis, and their options for treatment.

Our oncologists and hematologists also consult with surgeons, radiotherapists, other physicians and Oncology Support Services specialists as appropriate to coordinate treatment of the patient's cancer.

Oncology Support Services
As part of the Oncology Department, psychiatry services are available to patients and their family members. Services may address emotional issues, practical obstacles, social concerns, relaxation skills or pain management. To learn more, visit our Oncology Support Services page.

Social Services
Social Services are a part of the Oncology team. The social worker assists patients and families with social concerns surrounding their diagnosis. If you have concerns, please ask to meet with our social worker.

Dietary Services
As a cancer patient, it’s important for you to maintain good nutrition. The recommendations for Oncology patients may differ from normal dietary suggestions because your body needs additional nutrients. If you have questions, a dietary consultation at Dean Clinic - West, Dean Clinic - East, Dean Clinic - Fish Hatchery, Dean Clinic - Sun Prairie or Dean Clinic - Janesville East may be helpful.

Cancer Genetic Counseling
Cancer risk assessment is a consultative service for women and men who have concerns about their personal and/or family genetic counseling history of cancer. About 15-20% of cancers are considered familial, where some risks may apply. About 5-10% of cancers are hereditary, where risks to family members are much greater than in the general population. Ask your physician if a genetics counseling appointment would be appropriate for you.

Dean Foundation Research Studies
Since 1988, Dean Clinic has participated in Oncology research studies. In cancer research, clinical trials are designed to answer questions about new ways to treat cancer, ways of using old treatments or managing symptoms of cancer or its treatment. Your physician may recommend that you participate in a clinical trial. Participation is voluntary and your progress will be monitored by the research staff in the clinic. Health Information
Health information is protected by HIPPA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act). In order to share health information with a family member or friend; you must complete a Permission for Verbal Communication consent form.

Advance Directives
The State of Wisconsin recommends that advance directive information be provided to patients by their healthcare providers. The following forms are available in the Oncology Department or at the Department of Health Services website.

Power of Attorney for Health Care 
The Power of Attorney for Health Care makes it possible for adults in Wisconsin to authorize other individuals to make health care decisions on their behalf should they become incapacitated. You can download a form on our Advance Directives page.

Declaration to Physicians (Living Will)
This form makes it possible for adults in Wisconsin to state their preferences for life-sustaining procedures and feeding tubes in the event the person is in a terminal condition or persistent vegetative state. For more information, visit our Advance Directives page.

Bracelets and forms are available in the department. Please discuss this option with your Oncologist.
